Position: General Services Technician Unlicensed, Plant Operations (40Hrs Eve Sat-Wed 2:30PM-11:00PM )

Schedule: Full Time


Under general supervision, performs variety of manual labor tasks and general maintenance activities throughout the hospital and its premises to maintain a safe and efficient hospital environment. Duties may include: cleaning and preparing job sites, loading and delivering materials; setting up and taking down ladders, scaffolding and other temporary structures; performing equipment repairs and using a variety of tools and machines, such as blowtorches, forklifts, levels, lifts, power drills, grinders, saws, pressure washers and water spraying equipment. Assists carpenters, masons and other specialized contractors as assigned.


Laborer duties:

  • Performs all general maintenance duties. Works, as assigned, with licensed General Services Technicians in order to maintain a safe and efficient patient-orientated environment.
  • Responds to emergency calls for repairs and service from the Control Center.
  • Plans and performs the construction, installation, renovation, maintenance and repair of the carpentry related functions throughout the hospital.
  • Replaces and repairs steam system parts and fixtures.
  • Makes rounds as assigned and inspects equipment and records. Enters data into appropriate database.
  • Plans and performs preventative maintenance schedules as assigned.
  • Troubleshoots all designated equipment and reports any problems.
  • Prepares stock orders for purchasing.
  • Inspects maintenance equipment to ensure it is functioning properly.
  • Paints all painted and unpainted surfaces as assigned in all areas of hospital. Performs the functions of a General Maintenance Helper.

General duties:

  • Performs all work in a safe and efficient manner. Ensures work areas are clean and free of debris upon completion of all tasks.
  • Utilizes hospital's RESPECT attributes as the basis for decision making and to facilitate the hospital's mission.
  • Follows established hospital infection control and safety procedures.
  • Assists co-workers or supervisors with other duties as required.



High school diploma (or GED) is required. Completion of a trade school apprenticeship program or higher, preferred.


Preferred (not required for hire but may be required during employment) : Forklift operation certification, lock out tag out, confined space, MSDS, asbestos and lead identification, ladder safety, emergency evacuation, in-house OSHA and respirator training.


At least three years' experience as a laborer in either a construction, commercial, industrial, or facilities operations setting.


  • Knowledgeable in various painting methods and practices; ability to properly mix and match paints and varnishes, apply finishes to a wide variety of surfaces; estimate wait times and materials required on widely varied assignments.
  • Basic computer proficiency to keep computerized records and prepare reports.
  • Ability to follow and give oral and written instructions in English and ability to read, comprehend, and work from plans and blueprints.
  • Highly detailed-oriented and ability to maintain proper productivity and work flow for multiple projects.
  • Must be a team player and able to maintain cooperative working relationships. Must display a professional and courteous attitude to co-workers, supervisors and the general public at all times.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to and respect for a diverse population.
  • Must be able to safely use manual tools and power equipment common in the trade. Must be able to safely handle hazardous materials.
  • Must be able to perform physical activities, such as, but not limited to, lifting equipment (up to 50 lbs. unassisted), bending, standing, climbing or walking.
